The book of Revelations introduces us to the Two Witnesses who will emerge in the last days. The book of Revelations has always caused a lot of confusion and it doesn’t help that it’s written is metaphorical way yet some parts are very straightforward. Therefore it’s difficult to distinguish at which point the author is using the metaphor and at which point we can take it literally. We have to remember that this was intention of God. God deliberately left it as a mystery so that we would always come back to the Bible, always be on point, ready at any time and never taking our eyes from the Bible by trying to unlock those mysteries. Imagine if we were given exact date, time and place when things will happen, I’m sure no one would be engaged and would put the Bible down until the last hour.
We are being introduced to the Two Witnesses in the Book of Revelations, however they are actually in the Old Testament and so our role is to put pieces together.
In the book of Zechariah, similarly to the book of Revelations, we see two olive trees and two anointed Servants who stand by the two sides of God. One is at the right side of God and the other one at the left side of God.
“Then I answered and said to him, “What are these two olive trees—at the right of the lampstand and at its left?” Zechariah 4: 11
We know that Jesus is standing by the right side of God:
“Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” Acts 7: 56
And therefore he is one of those Two Servants, who came to be a sacrificial lamb for our sins. Christ or the Messiah means “Anointed One” and the Angel tells Zechariah that there are “two anointed ones”:
So he said, “These are the two anointed ones, who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.” Zechariah 4: 14
Therefore there is also another “Anointed One”, who stands on the left side of God. Who is that?
There are many speculations who those two Anointed Ones or Two Witnesses are. Some people are saying that this is referencing to the Old and New Testament, which is wrong, because Old and New Testament can’t be “anointed ones”. Being Anointed One means being filled with the Holy Spirit, the spirit of God and books can’t have the spirit. Others reference it to Elijah and Moses, however this also is wrong because Elijah and Moses can’t be standing by the two sides of the Lord. One is reserved for Jesus so there is only one place left.
We also know that neither Elijah nor Moses were with God during the creation of the earth, but Jesus was. So this would have to be someone who, like Jesus, was present during the creation and also like Jesus, was sent to earth to help during the end times. Just like Adam had a “helper”, Jesus will also have a “helper” during those times. That is why there is a Second Servant of God who stands on the left side of God, another anointed one who is on earth during the end times.
This idea is never taught at the church. Why? Because of Apostle Paul, who stole this title to himself by appointing himself to be the light to the Gentiles. Paul lived with the assurance that the end is near and Jesus is coming back, so he came to this conclusion that He must be the other “anointed one” to help bring Gentiles to the light. He also confused people by creating a doctrine that church is the bride and diverted the attention away that there could be another Servant of God. He also introduced the idea that women should be silent and that they should not teach. You have to ask yourself a question why? What if I tell you because the other Servant of God is a woman.
The book of Isaiah is a very unique book that cannot be treated in historical and chronological way, even though it has been composed during Babylonian captivity and reflects those times. It’s more that just a look into a history because some prophecies hasn’t been fulfilled and the words found in the book of Isaiah can be very relevant to our current situation. The book of Isaiah is a conversation of God with His two servants and therefore it’s not written in chronological order of the events, because it goes back and forth between those Servants, who are on earth in different times. At times, it is difficult to distinguish at which point God is directing His words to Jesus and at what point to the Second Servant. Therefore it has to be treated as a book of hidden meanings. Also it shows that there are prophecies that are still to come which confuse people in Christianity, who often think Old Testament is finished. I often go back to the book of Isaiah and I think this is my most visited book from all of the prophets.
Let’s have a look at the first Servant which we know is Jesus Christ, the Son of God:
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isiah 7:14
“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” Isiah 9:6-7
“Your eyes will see the King in His beauty;
They will see the land that is very far off.” Isiah 33:17
“Behold, the Lord God shall come with a strong hand,
And His arm shall rule for Him;
Behold, His reward is with Him,
And His work before Him.
He will feed His flock like a shepherd;
He will gather the lambs with His arm,
And carry them in His bosom,
And gently lead those who are with young.” Isiah 40:10
“Behold! My Servant whom I uphold,
My Elect One in whom My soul delights!
I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,
Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.
He will not fail nor be discouraged,
Till He has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands shall wait for His law.” Isiah 42: 1-4
“I, the Lord, have called You in righteousness,
And will hold Your hand;
I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people,
As a light to the Gentiles,
To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
I am the Lord, that is My name;
And My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved images.
Behold, the former things have come to pass,
And new things I declare;
Before they spring forth I tell you of them.” Isiah 42: 6-9
“For the Lord God will help Me;
Therefore I will not be disgraced;
Therefore I have set My face like a flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.
He is near who justifies Me;
Who will contend with Me?
Let us stand together.
Who is My adversary?
Let him come near Me.
Surely the Lord God will help Me;
Who is he who will condemn Me?
Indeed they will all grow old like a garment;
The moth will eat them up.” Isaiah 49: 7-9
“The Lord God has given Me
The tongue of the learned,
That I should know how to speak
A word in season to him who is weary.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear
To hear as the learned.
The Lord God has opened My ear;
And I was not rebellious,
Nor did I turn away.
I gave My back to those who struck Me,
And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;
I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.” Isaiah 50: 4-6
“Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently;
He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.
Just as many were astonished at you,
So His visage was marred more than any man,
And His form more than the sons of men;
So shall He sprinkle many nations.
Kings shall shut their mouths at Him;
For what had not been told them they shall see,
And what they had not heard they shall consider.” Isiah 52: 13-15
“He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” Isaiah 53: 3-6
“He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.” Isaiah 53: 7-9
“Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.” Isaiah 53: 10-11
“Indeed I have given him as a witness to the people,
A leader and commander for the people.
Surely you shall call a nation you do not know,
And nations who do not know you shall run to you,
Because of the Lord your God,
And the Holy One of Israel;
For He has glorified you.” Isiah 55: 4-5
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has Anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.” Isiah 61: 1-3
Now, let’s look at the second Servant
The Second Servant in the book of Isiah has many names – Daughter of Zion, Jerusalem, Israel, disappointing vineyard, desolate – she is the Daughter of God. In the book of Isiah chapter 50 Jesus is her hope, he is her redeemer. She is also referred to as the “desolate” in the book of Daniel and the book of Jeremiah, but for now, let’s focus on the book of Isiah:
“Why do you persist in rebellion?
Your whole head is injured,
your whole heart afflicted.
From the sole of your foot to the top of your head
there is no soundness—
only wounds and welts
and open sores,
not cleansed or bandaged
or soothed with olive oil.
Your country is desolate,
your cities burned with fire;
your fields are being stripped by foreigners
right before you,
laid waste as when overthrown by strangers.
Daughter Zion is left
like a shelter in a vineyard,
like a hut in a cucumber field,
like a city under siege.” Isiah 1: 5-8
We are being introduced to her as the rebellious one. We see that there will be a judgement on Jerusalem:
“The gates of Zion will lament and mourn;
destitute, she will sit on the ground.” Isiah 3:26
She is a disappointing vineyard:
“My Well-beloved has a vineyard
On a very fruitful hill.” Isiah 5:1
“In that day sing to her,
“A vineyard of red wine!” Isiah 27:2
“In that day the Branch of the Lord will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the pride and glory of the survivors in Israel. Those who are left in Zion, who remain in Jerusalem, will be called holy, all who are recorded among the living in Jerusalem. The Lord will wash away the filth of the women of Zion; he will cleanse the bloodstains from Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.” Isiah 4:2-4
See how the faithful city
has become a prostitute!
She once was full of justice;
righteousness used to dwell in her—
but now murderers! Isaiah 1: 21
“Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
In Galilee of the Gentiles.” Isiah 9: 1
“Speak comfort to Jerusalem, and cry out to her,
That her warfare is ended,
That her iniquity is pardoned;
For she has received from the Lord’s hand
Double for all her sins.” Isiah 40:2
“O Zion,
You who bring good tidings,
Get up into the high mountain;
O Jerusalem,
You who bring good tidings,
Lift up your voice with strength,
Lift it up, be not afraid;
Say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!” Isiah 40:9
“But you, Israel, are My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
The descendants of Abraham My friend.
You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,
And called from its farthest regions,
And said to you,
‘You are My servant,
I have chosen you and have not cast you away:
Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’” Isiah 41: 8-10
Who is the righteous right hand of the Lord? – Jesus Christ. Jesus will uphold her.
“But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name;
You are Mine.” Isiah 43: 1
“And Israel, for you are My servant;
I have formed you, you are My servant;
O Israel, you will not be forgotten by Me!
I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions,
And like a cloud, your sins.
Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.” Isiah 44:21-22
“And He said to me,
‘You are My servant, O Israel,
In whom I will be glorified.’
Then I said, ‘I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and in vain;
Yet surely my just reward is with the Lord,
And my work with my God.’ ”
“And now the Lord says,
Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant,
To bring Jacob back to Him,
So that Israel is gathered to Him
(For I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord,
And My God shall be My strength),
Indeed He says,
‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant
To raise up the tribes of Jacob,
And to restore the preserved ones of Israel;
I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles,
That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” Isiah 49: 3-6
“Thus says the Lord:
“In an acceptable time I have heard You,
And in the day of salvation I have helped You;
I will preserve You and give You
As a covenant to the people,
To restore the earth,
To cause them to inherit the desolate heritages;
That You may say to the prisoners, ‘Go forth,’
To those who are in darkness, ‘Show yourselves.’
“They shall feed along the roads,
And their pastures shall be on all desolate heights.” Isiah 49: 8-9
“For the Lord will comfort Zion,
He will comfort all her waste places;
He will make her wilderness like Eden,
And her desert like the garden of the Lord;
Joy and gladness will be found in it,
Thanksgiving and the voice of melody.” Isaiah 51: 3
“Awake, awake!
Stand up, O Jerusalem,
You who have drunk at the hand of the Lord
The cup of His fury;
You have drunk the dregs of the cup of trembling,
And drained it out.
There is no one to guide her
Among all the sons she has brought forth;
Nor is there any who takes her by the hand
Among all the sons she has brought up.” Isaiah 51: 17-18
“Awake, awake!
Put on your strength, O Zion;
Put on your beautiful garments,
O Jerusalem, the holy city!
For the uncircumcised and the unclean
Shall no longer come to you.
Shake yourself from the dust, arise;
Sit down, O Jerusalem!
Loose yourself from the bonds of your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion!” Isaiah 52: 1-2
“Sing, O barren,
You who have not borne!
Break forth into singing, and cry aloud,
You who have not labored with child!
For more are the children of the desolate
Than the children of the married woman,” says the Lord.
“Enlarge the place of your tent,
And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings;
Do not spare;
Lengthen your cords,
And strengthen your stakes.
For you shall expand to the right and to the left,
And your descendants will inherit the nations,
And make the desolate cities inhabited.” Isiah 54: 1-3
“Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed;
Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame;
For you will forget the shame of your youth,
And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.
For your Maker is your husband,
The Lord of hosts is His name;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;
He is called the God of the whole earth.” Isiah 54: 4-6
“For the Lord has called you
Like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit,
Like a youthful wife when you were refused,”
Says your God.
“For a mere moment I have forsaken you,
But with great mercies I will gather you.
With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment;
But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you,”
Says the Lord, your Redeemer.” Isiah 54: 6-9
“O you afflicted one,
Tossed with tempest, and not comforted,
Behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems,
And lay your foundations with sapphires.
I will make your pinnacles of rubies,
Your gates of crystal,
And all your walls of precious stones.
All your children shall be taught by the Lord,
And great shall be the peace of your children.
In righteousness you shall be established;
You shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear;” Isaiah 54: 11-14
“I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
My soul shall be joyful in my God;
For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its bud,
As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth,
So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.” Isiah 61: 10-11
“For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace,
And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,
Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,
And her salvation as a lamp that burns.
The Gentiles shall see your righteousness,
And all kings your glory.
You shall be called by a new name,
Which the mouth of the Lord will name.
You shall also be a crown of glory
In the hand of the Lord,
And a royal diadem
In the hand of your God.
You shall no longer be termed Forsaken,
Nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate;
But you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah;
For the Lord delights in you,
And your land shall be married.” Isiah 62: 1-4
“Before she was in labor, she gave birth;
Before her pain came,
She delivered a male child.
Who has heard such a thing?
Who has seen such things?
Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day?
Or shall a nation be born at once?
For as soon as Zion was in labor,
She gave birth to her children.
Shall I bring to the time of birth, and not cause delivery?” says the Lord.
“Shall I who cause delivery shut up the womb?” says your God.
“Rejoice with Jerusalem,
And be glad with her, all you who love her;
Rejoice for joy with her, all you who mourn for her;
That you may feed and be satisfied
With the consolation of her bosom,
That you may drink deeply and be delighted
With the abundance of her glory.” Isaiah 66: 7-11
“For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream.
Then you shall feed;
On her sides shall you be carried,
And be dandled on her knees.
As one whom his mother comforts,
So I will comfort you;
And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” Isaiah 66: 12-13
In the book of Isaiah 43 we see God speaking to both of the Servants that they are His witnesses:
“You are My witnesses,” says the Lord,
“And My servant whom I have chosen,
That you may know and believe Me,
And understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed,
Nor shall there be after Me.
I, even I, am the Lord,
And besides Me there is no savior.
I have declared and saved,
I have proclaimed,
And there was no foreign god among you;
Therefore you are My witnesses,”
Says the Lord, “that I am God.” Isaiah 43: 10-13
Now, let’s have a look at them together in the book of Jeremiah:
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
“That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
A King shall reign and prosper,
And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In His days Judah will be saved,
And Israel will dwell safely;
Now this is His name by which He will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Jeremiah 23: 5-6
‘Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will perform that good thing which I have promised to the house of Israel and to the house of Judah:
‘In those days and at that time
I will cause to grow up to David
A Branch of righteousness;
He shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.
In those days Judah will be saved,
And Jerusalem will dwell safely.
And this is the name by which She will be called:
THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.’ Jeremiah 33: 14-16
There are more scripture found in other books of the Old Testament, I encourage you to read with an open mind.
“Now gather yourself in troops,
O daughter of troops;
He has laid siege against us;
They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.”
Therefore He shall give them up,
Until the time that she who is in labor has given birth;
Then the remnant of His brethren
Shall return to the children of Israel.
And He shall stand and feed His flock
In the strength of the Lord,
In the majesty of the name of the Lord His God;
And they shall abide,
For now He shall be great
To the ends of the earth;
And this One shall be peace.” Micah 5: 1-5
“Sing, O daughter of Zion!
Shout, O Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,
O daughter of Jerusalem!
The Lord has taken away your judgments,
He has cast out your enemy.
The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst;
You shall see disaster no more.
In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem:
“Do not fear;
Zion, let not your hands be weak.
The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3: 14-17
I am aware this might be very new for some and you might not see it or even want to believe it as we’ve only been hearing about Jesus and that there is only one servant – Jesus, however the second servant has been saved for the end times and hidden by God “In the shadow of His hand He has hidden Me” (Isaiah). The details about the second servant have been for necessary reasons hidden. It is presented purposely in secrets and metaphors so we don’t know in many cases what that metaphor means until it actually happens. We know it can’t be taken literally and it requires a deep though and contemplation of those mysteries. Bible is a mysterious book but one of the books that confirm this hidden matter is the book of Revelations otherwise known as Apocalypse. The word “Apocalypse” is coming from a Greek word Apocalypto – which means unveiling, to uncover, to reveal. Therefore it’s alluding to that time, that second servant will be revealed and unveiled then.
“Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.” Revelation 21: 10-11
We have seen those stones in the Isaiah 54: 11
“Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.” Revelation 21: 12
That is why the New Jerusalem, the Bride of Christ and the desolate one is also a woman from the book of Revelation that the serpent is after:
“Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth.” Revelation 12: 1-2
Twelve stars represent twelve tribes of the children of Israel. The woman with a child has been interpreted in many ways because it’s very metaphorical. However, as well as a metaphor, this is also an actual woman so this can be taken in two ways.
I hope you can open your mind to a different perspective and see this as a natural progression. Just as the world started with Adam and Eve, so man and woman, it will end with a couple of servants, man and a woman. Not just one man – Jesus. Jesus will have a helper – a woman.
